Tried and Tested Tips and Tricks for DIY AC Maintenance

The worst thing you would ever experience during the cold months of winter or the extremely hot months of summer is a dysfunctional air conditioning unit. The good news is that there are some super cool and easy AC maintenance tips and hacks that will ensure your AC unit is as functional as it can ever get. Here are some of the basic maintenance tips to get you started on a functional and effective air conditioning unit throughout the year.

For starters, you might want to ensure you are dealing with a clean air conditioning unit so make sure you are cleaning it on a regular basis. Cleaning the AC is ensuring the fins are sparkling and dust free, which you do when you remove the fan cage on the exterior part of the unit. This can be done by hand or using a vacuum that has a soft bristle head. Should you encounter very stubborn dirt, you can introduce readily available fin sprays to help dislodge the dirt and make it easy to clean. It is also advisable that you straighten the fins of your AC unit as you are cleaning them in case they are crooked. At the very least, you will be assured of quality air flowing at optimal speeds without having the fins blocking airflow.

The other tip to ensure optimal performance of your air conditioning unit is to have the blower air filters changed at least twice a year. The best times to do this would be just before summer and just before winter kicks in. While at it, be sure you are replacing the air filters with the right size and model as the one that you are getting out. You will know your condensate drain tube needs to be checked when you notice a pool of water on the furnace when the AC is running.

Note that this condensation from the Air conditioner coils will accumulate bacteria over time, leading to the formation of slime. You have to pay close attention to the pain drain tube to ensure it is not clogged lest you open a whole new can of worms, so to speak. You might also want to have a closer look at the evaporator coil to ensure optimal performance of your unit. All you need to do unscrew it from the coil door, and you can then use a soft brush to get rid of the dust piled up. Do not forget to clean the drain pan while in the process, which you do by adding some bleach on warm, soapy water. If you follow these tips, you are sure of having a functional AC whose durability will not be compromised.
